Taras Properties is to bring forward a boutique hotel development within the former Fire Station on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. The development will also include dining, food and beverage offers within the impressive, Grade II listed, iconic former Fire Station buildings, located in the heart of Newcastle City Centre.

Taras Properties will invest in the refurbishment of the Grade II listed building to provide a hotel of approximately 5,500sqm with 60 bedrooms, and 3,850sqft of restaurant and bar uses located at ground floor level. The scheme will also involve public realm improvements to Pilgrim Street incorporating planting and new seating areas.

Taras Properties, which owns the building, has worked up the development proposals with Newcastle City Council. A public consultation exhibition for businesses and residents in the surrounding area is scheduled to commence on 15 October.

Matt Verlander, Planning & Development Director at Avison Young; “This is an exciting project to bring forward a high quality hotel and dining offer which isn’t currently provided within Newcastle city centre.  The development forms part of the wider programme of regeneration on Pilgrim Street extending from the Swan House roundabout up to Northumberland Street. This scheme marks just one phase of the development including the Bank House office building where construction has recently commenced on site.”

“We look forward to sharing the proposals with the local community, stakeholders and businesses and listening to their views on the project.”

Given current COVID-19 restrictions details of the proposals can be viewed at the project website:

The proposals will also be on display at the offices of Ryder Architecture at Cooper’s Studios, 14-18 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3NN.

The consultation window will close on 1 November, following which the project team will review the comments received. A planning application for the project is anticipated to be submitted to the Council in November.

Avison Young’s Newcastle office is appointed to provide Commercial, Town Planning and Project Management advice on the scheme with architectural design by Ryder Architecture. Cundall is providing engineering input

The building was opened in 1933 and used as the main Fire Station for Newcastle until it’s closure in 2005.
