Following another successful event in May, the annual Newcastle Startup Week festival will return for a third time in 2019 on both sides of the Tyne.

As in previous years, the five-day entrepreneurship and innovation festival will begin on Monday 13 May with Day 1 (‘Inspiration Day’) at The Boiler Shop on Stephenson Quarter in Newcastle but Day 2 (‘Getting Started’) will take place at St Mary’s Heritage Centre, Gateshead on Tuesday 14 May. The rest of the week’s events will be based at various venues across the city.

Cllr John Adams, Cabinet Member for the Economy said, “This is great news. It’s important that entrepreneurs from across Newcastle and Gateshead work together to maximise the creative, social and economic potential of the North East by developing strategic and creative initiatives, sharing practice and resources, and by being a strong collective voice. I would encourage the Gateshead community to get involved if they’re not already.”

“There’s lots happening this side of the Tyne, especially on Baltic Quarter. PROTO: The Emerging Technology Centre is opening soon. Europe’s first dedicated facility for emerging tech, and part of Digital Catapult NETV, will give businesses of any size, from any sector, the opportunity to explore VR and AR amongst other emerging tech. For example, if you’re a new retailer you might test AR to determine what buyers look at in a shop and what their eyes are drawn to, helping with product placement.

“Access to this kit is usually very expensive but we’re offering an affordable alternative. The council is very supportive of start-ups having access to tech to digitalise their own business.”

Paul Lancaster, Founder & Organiser of Newcastle Startup Week said “Despite the name, Newcastle Startup Week is all about celebrating local business success stories of the past, present and future from across the North East, showcasing why our region is such a great place to start or grow a business and helping more people to become more entrepreneurial. As a Gateshead lad who still lives in the borough, I’m delighted that we will be running events on both sides of the Tyne in 2019 and hope to see even more people from South of the river coming along next year.”

“Gateshead Council have always been very forward-thinking when it comes to supporting new and emerging businesses, art and culture and the new developments on Baltic Quarter make it a very attractive location for businesses looking to expand or re-locate into the area. We’re excited to be working with them on making the event even bigger and better in 2019 and helping to grow the local economy together.”
