Planning and environmental consultancy Axis is celebrating 25 years in business with an exciting expansion into North East England, opening a new office in Hoults Yard in the heart of Newcastle.

The move strengthens Axis’ presence across the UK, creating new opportunities for collaboration, recruitment, and sector growth.

Established in 2000, Axis has a strong track record of gaining the necessary consents for development across multiple sectors and has established itself as a trusted provider of planning and environmental consultancy support for infrastructure projects in particular.

The company’s Newcastle office will be led by Ian Cansfield, who joins as Technical Director. Ian has been based in the North East throughout his career from where he has gained a wide breadth of experience across the UK.

He brings particular expertise in masterplanning, regeneration, data centres, leisure and residential development.  Recruitment is already underway to build a dedicated local team to support the region’s growing demand for expert planning, transport and landscape advice.

“Bringing Axis to the North East in our 25th year is a fantastic opportunity to enhance our reach and offer our expertise to new clients,” said Ian Cansfield, Technical Director at Axis.

“We look forward to working with developers, and businesses across the region to help bring forward successful projects with sustainable, intelligent planning at their core.”

The development landscape in the North East is evolving quickly, particularly with the recent allocation of £1.7 billion in government funding for carbon capture and low-carbon hydrogen projects. This funding supports the Track 1 industrial cluster decarbonisation program for the East Coast Cluster around Teesside, alongside the Hynet project in the Northwest. The push for rapid growth in the hydrogen and carbon capture sectors has also led to a greater need for specialist planning and environmental expertise.

Axis is well-equipped to meet these demands, with ongoing projects in both the North East and North West. One such project is the recent approval of planning permission for a groundbreaking CO2 storage facility project in Teesside.

Opening an office in Newcastle is intended to consolidate Axis’ position and provide much needed specialist planning support for the North East region.

Cllr Dan Greenhough, Cabinet Member for Economy, Jobs and Skills, Newcastle City Council, said: “Axis’ decision to open a new office in Newcastle is a clear vote of confidence in our city and the wider North East region.

“As we continue to drive forward our plan for delivering inclusive and sustainable urban development, having experienced planning and environmental consultancy expertise on our doorstep will be invaluable.

“We welcome Axis to Newcastle and look forward to seeing their contribution to shaping key infrastructure and regeneration projects in the years to come.”

As Axis embarks on its next 25 years, its commitment to shaping a more sustainable future remains stronger than ever.

For companies in the North East looking for expert planning guidance, Axis’ arrival offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with an industry leader with a quarter-century of expertise.
